5 Sources Of Good Carbs

June 06, 2016

Carbohydrates have developed quite a bad rep
and it's something I am asked about by so many of you.
A lot of programs will deem carbs as the main contributor to weight gain
and some will go so far as to completely eliminate carbs.
But the truth is carbohydrates are an extremely important part of your diet as they play an essential role in our body's energy building process.
Whether you're a gym goer, an athlete or just living a normal day to day lifestyle, carbs are vital to keep your system going.
Like fats, not all carbs are created equally,
so here's a list to keep you feeling energised.
1. Quinoa
Quinoa is a nutrient packed carb, it is a great replacement for
white bread and rice and hosts a whole range of benefits.
It has 9 essential amino acids that strengthen your immune system and helps promote efficient muscle building and repair. It contains fibre, potassium, iron, magnesium and vitamin E, it is also loaded with heart healthy fats, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients. And if all that wasn't enough,
it is a fantastic energy source.
2. Brown Rice
Brown rice is white rice before it goes through an extensive refining process.
It contains thiamine, potassium, fibre and magnesium.
It has a firmer texture but still provides that fluffliness we love, making it perfect for stir fries, salads and curries. So if you're hoping to lose a few pounds and need carbs to keep you going, definitely opt for brown rice.
It is high in fibre, low in fat and low in calories.
3. Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes truly are a versatile source of carbohydrates.
They are rich in beta-carotene and contain 90%
of the daily recommended amount of Vitamin A.
They are rich in Vitamin D, iron, magnesium and Vitamin B6. They are also high in Vitamin C which is essential for better digestion and to ward off colds and flus.
4. Oats
This popular breakfast staple quickly became
a thing of the past with the popularity of eliminating carbs.
But thanks to clean eating now, oats are back in our kitchen presses
where they belong.
Oats contain beta-glucan which helps lower cholesterol in our bodies and because they are rich in dietary fibre,
they help balance blood sugar levels and improve digestion.
And thanks to oats being so filling, they are fantastic if your goal is to lose weight.
Add a bowl of oats to your Miss Fit Skinny Tea morning routine and you won't find yourself craving that 11am chocolate bar or office biscuit tin.
The best oats to buy are steel cut oats or dry rolled oats.
5. Whole Fruits
I bet you never thought that fruits would offer a healthy dose of carbohydrates??
The best fruits to opt for berries, apples, and watermelons.
They are easy to digest thanks to their high fibre content. They are absorbed quickly into the body, giving you a clean surge of energy.
Your serving should be 1/2 a cup to 1 cup.
So as you can see, eating carbs as part of a balanced meal including lean protein,
is essential for your body's energy, while providing a healthy, filling meal.
